Director Scott Teems Discusses The Quarry’s 10-Year Journey [Interview]
Scott Teems, the writer/director, is clearly interested in stories about redemption. That Evening Sun, his first feature film, was about a farmer who returns home to cope with a family secret. He appeared for a season on the TV show “Rectify,” which follows a guy who is trying to put his life back together after spending nearly two decades on death row.
Teems’ latest film, The Quarry, is a thriller based on Damon Galgut’s novel of the same name, which follows the story of a drifter whose fortuitous roadside encounter with a troubled preacher changes his life forever and pushes him to confront his actions.
The Quarry is a film that is quite introspective and mainly relies on the performers to create most of the internalized drama. Teems has two powerhouse performers in Shea Whigham and Michael Shannon, who are more than capable of matching the story’s demands, and they both succeed in delivering the dynamite performances at the heart of this silent thriller.
We had the opportunity to chat with Teems immediately before the film’s SXSW premiere to discuss the story’s appeal, casting, and what’s next.
